Message from Eric Fuller: Race, Equality and U.S. Xpress

by Ashley Rhodes 10. June 2020 13:37

I've spent a great deal of time thinking about what's happening in our country today relative to race, justice and equality. I've talked with friends and colleagues about what we're seeing on the news every day and am asking myself the sometimes uncomfortable question: how can we make things better? I hope this message will begin to answer that question.

Every day as a management team, we make decisions that are highly calculated to determine the risk/reward, impact to our business and reputation, and try to maintain a level of middle ground. Now is the time to not hide behind our fear of reactions, but to stand up for what is right and just.

For the last two weeks, the citizens of this country have no longer been able to pretend that racial discrimination and inequality is something that doesn't continue to exist. The brutal killings of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and others have shown us that systemic racism is still alive in 2020. I am personally angry. Angry that in this country, which I believe is the greatest country on earth, these types of things are still occurring. Angry that we as a society often look the other way and pretend that nothing is really going on or even worse that it's somehow justified. Angry that, while a segment of society is hurting and feels marginalized, we bury our heads in the sand and go about our day.

It's obvious that we have not made enough progress towards equality, whether it's race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or other areas in which we differ. We must learn to celebrate the differences that everyone brings to this nation. Our greatest strength is our diversity, but we also allow it to be the one thing that divides us the most.

As for U.S. Xpress' role in this movement, we must support our Black colleagues and show them that we want change as well. We value everyone that's a part of our broad US Xpress family, and we will not stand by while our friends and colleagues are hurt and yearn for change.  We support all our colleagues who have ever felt marginalized or discriminated against in any manner.

We have a conscientious company, and we are building an amazing culture. However, we also know our success will be driven by our employees and through the support of their families. With all of this in mind, I lay out the things that I want us all to remember and to focus on as ambassadors of U.S. Xpress. Most of these are obvious and things that we all already do on a regular basis:

  • We will not tolerate discrimination or harassment of any kind. That's not just a company policy but one that needs to be felt by every individual in the organization.
  • We will celebrate diversity and the differences that everyone brings. Learn from those with different experiences than yourselves. Personal experiences and context make us who we are and frame our beliefs.
  • We will not be afraid to speak out against inequality and we will inspire others through our words and actions.
  • We will be mindful of what we do and say, not just while at work but at all times in both our work and personal lives.
  • We will lift each other up and support all of our coworkers because we are all on the same team and working for the same goal.

For me, this is more than a company "policy" or a political stance. It's a human stance. It's the right thing to do. We can all have our opinions about ways to effect change or the direction that we want to see the country go in as long as it's one that celebrates the diversity that makes this great country so special. I am proud of everyone at this company, and I know that the people of this organization will rise to any challenge. Please join me in spreading acceptance and inclusiveness in all that we do. Look for information coming soon about action we'll take as a company to contribute to healing and progress for us, our colleagues and our country.

Adjusting Company Precautions for Taking Temperatures & Wearing Masks/Gloves

by Christina Sacco 8. June 2020 16:22

As more information is made available about the detection and spread of COVID-19, we are constantly looking at the practices we have put in place to keep everyone healthy and safe.

At this time, we are prepared to adjust some of the precautions we implemented when the pandemic began. Starting Monday, June 8th, these new guidelines will go into effect:

  • Temperature checks will now only be conducted at U.S. Xpress and customer locations if required by state/local government mandates.
  • Masks will continue to be provided but do not have to be worn, unless required by specific customers or state/local government mandates.
  • Gloves will be provided for Dedicated freight-handling accounts only, but will not be mandatory for these accounts, unless required by specific customers or state/local government mandates.

We will continue providing hand sanitizer and disinfectant spray at all U.S. Xpress service centers and Dedicated locations.

If you have any questions about these new guidelines, please reach out to your manager or the HR Service Center at 1-844-USXPRESS (Option #7).

As always, thanks for driving with us and for putting in so much hard to help keep this country running. Stay safe, stay healthy, and know that we’re here for you.

One Week Left to Enroll in the Employee Stock Purchase Plan

by Ashley Rhodes 8. June 2020 15:30

With our Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP), from June 1-15, any U.S. Xpress employee who's been with the company for at least 12 months can purchase U.S. Xpress stock at a 15% discount.

This discount is both higher than many of our competitor trucking companies and the highest allowable by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Here's How it Works:

Each year, there will be two enrollment periods (June 1-15 and December 1-15) during which you can sign up for the ESPP and determine what percentage of your compensation you want to allocate to purchasing U.S. Xpress stock.

After that, there are six-month "funding periods" during which time your pre-determined allocation will be withheld from your paycheck. At the end of each funding period, the funds that have been deducted from your paycheck will be used to purchase shares at a 15% discount off the stock price on either the first day or the last day of the funding period, whichever is lower.

So, for example, if you enroll in June 2020 and the stock is trading at $5 per share on the first day of the funding period (July 1, 2020) and trading at $10 per share on the last day of the funding period (December 31, 2020), the money that's been withheld during that six-month period would be used to buy stock at 15% off the lower of the two prices, or $4.25 ($5/share less 15% discount). Although you will need to hold the shares for one year prior to selling or transferring them, it is hard to beat a 15% discount on the lower of two prices.

Have You Signed Up Previously for the ESPP?

If you plan to keep the same contribution you set during your previous enrollment, you do not need to do anything.

However, if you would like to increase, decrease or suspend your contribution, you do need to log into your account by visiting usxpress.solium.com (no activation code needed) and changing or suspending the percentage you initially allocated toward purchasing U.S. Xpress stock.

New to the ESPP? Follow these Three Simple Steps to Sign Up:

1. Decide what percentage of your compensation you'd like to allocate for purchasing stock at a 15% discount. You may contribute anywhere from 1% to 15% of your compensation, but not more than $25,000 over the course of a year ($12,500 for each 6-month period. IRS rules).

2. Be on the lookout for an email and letter that will include a 12-digit account activation code that's been generated just for you. You'll use that code to activate an online account that will allow you to enroll in the ESPP.

3. Activate your online account by visiting usxpress.solium.com to access the ESPP website called Shareworks.

o The first time you visit Shareworks, click "Open Account" in the top right corner of the webpage and use your 12-digit activation code to get started.

o Follow the prompts to activate your account, determine a password and enroll in the ESPP. Make sure to take this step during one of the two annual enrollment periods: June 1-15 or December 1-15.

o If for some reason you don't receive your activation code via mail or email, just give Shareworks a call at 1.877.380.7793 and they'll give you your activation code.

Locate Over 36,000 Grocery Stores Right from Your DriverTech

by Ashley Rhodes 6. June 2020 14:30

With restaurants shut down all over the country due to COVID-19, we know it’s more important than ever for you to be able to find a grocery store to buy food and supplies while you’re out on the road. So, we updated the “Food” amenity stop options on your DriverTech to include 36,000+ grocery stores.

You may notice question marks next to grocery store names when you use this feature. That’s temporary. We wanted to get this option out to you as soon as possible, so we still have a few tweaks to make, but it’s already functioning properly and will get you where you need to go.

To keep you safe, when you choose a grocery store, DriverTech will guide you to a safe parking place within a quarter of a mile of the store.

Carry some sanitizing wipes to disinfect your grocery cart or basket. And remember to wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer (with at least 60% alcohol) before getting back in your cab.

Like many other businesses, some grocery stores are also closed due to the virus. To make sure you’ll be able to get what you need, we recommend calling the store you choose to make sure they’re open.

Cleaning Update: A Disinfection Fogging Service

by Ashley Rhodes 4. June 2020 15:00

From limiting access to hiring additional cleaning crews, we have been taking many different measures to help keep you safe while you’re on the road. Now, we’re doing even more by adding a disinfection fogging service to our cleaning regimen, a procedure utilizing a fogging machine that eliminates bacteria and viruses even in hard-to-reach or commonly overlooked places.

Facilities will be treated at least once per week (a maximum of 3x per week) until the threat of COVID-19 is behind us. Though the disinfectant is non-toxic, and you can re-enter a room after just 15 minutes, fogging will be done in the evening on specific days to help reduce any inconvenience. Times will be posted in common areas of each facility and communicated by on-site management before the disinfecting occurs.

Fogging has begun at the Tunnel Hill Service Center and will begin soon at other locations.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding disinfection fogging please contact the Facilities Department at facilities@usxpress.com.

Thanks for your cooperation and for all that you do. Stay safe out there.
