Severe Weather Alerts

by Miranda Brooks 14. January 2022 16:51

We want you to have the information you need to make the best decisions possible for your safety when encountering inclement weather conditions. Below, you’ll find important guidance from our safety team on how to respond on different types of weather you may encounter on the road.

What to do when you encounter inclement weather…

General best practices:

  • Turn on flashers anytime you slow down below the posted speed limit.
  • If you can't stop within your range of vision, you’re going too fast. Slow down.
  • Avoid pulling over on the side of the road when at all possible.
  • If you have a mechanical failure, follow emergency breakdown procedures.
    • Turn on your flashers.
    • Pull completely out of the lane of travel onto the shoulder and past the fog line.
    • Place emergency warning devices/triangles at appropriate distances.

Wind: 40mph+ wind can turn a truck and trailer over. When high wind conditions are present, seek a safe place to shut down asap. Here are a few tips for safe spaces in high wind conditions:

  • Park lined up with or between other trailers.
  • Avoid proximity to trees.
  • Park your truck so that the front, not side of your truck, is facing into the wind.
  • Park near a building or other large structure to help break the wind.
  • Avoid parking under underpasses.

Ice: During the winter season, it’s important to be on the lookout for ice on the road and monitor the forecast and temperature of the area you’re in. If you detect ice on the road, find a safe place to shut down.

Heavy rain, flooding, snow, fog, or other conditions that may impact visibility:

  • Heavy rain or Flooding:
    • If water is completely across the road or a parking lot, don’t try to drive through it.
  • Snow:
    • When driving in snow, try to drive on cleared lanes only, and be prepared to stop.
  • Limited visibility conditions:
    • Increase your following distance to account for additional time needed to stop.
    • If visibility is poor or obstructed, find a safe place to shut down.

Drivers, we’d love your feedback. If you have a tip for navigating winter weather that you don’t see listed here, email it to us at usxcommunications@usxpress.com. If you have questions, please contact your manager or ops team.

Want to earn some extra cash?

by Miranda Brooks 13. January 2022 17:11

Let’s be honest, who would be a better recruiter for professional drivers than another professional experienced driver?

We know our professional drivers know their job better than anyone, which is why we’re happy to reward drivers for referring new drivers. We’ll pay $4,000 for experienced team referrals and $2,000 for solo driver referrals. How cool is that? Up to $4,000 for a simple conversation—that’s tough to beat.

If your referral is hired, you’ll receive your referral bonus when they deliver their first load. And then you can get out there and refer another team or solo driver. Rinse and repeat.

All you have to do is text “refer” to (423) 436-9588 and our virtual assistant will guide you through the rest!

Help end human trafficking

by Miranda Brooks 11. January 2022 15:48

Human trafficking is a modern-day version of slavery. An estimated 40 million people are bought and sold each year and forced into labor or commercial sex. Hundreds of thousands of these victims are in the United States, and many trafficking networks cross paths with your routes and stops. Those who are trafficking others frequent motels, truck stops, rest stops, and restaurants.

Jan. 11 is Human Trafficking Awareness Day, and we want to thank all of you who have joined the 1M+ professional truck drivers who are helping fight back as certified Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT).

You can help victims of human trafficking with a TAT-certification course that involves a 26-minute video, followed by a 10-minute quiz.

The training is available on our Professional Driver Development Site. You can access the Professional Driver Development Site by one of three ways:

  1. On www.USXpressway.com, there’s a direct link with a button titled “Professional Driver Development Site”.
  2. Or, if you’re already logged into U.S. Xpressway, you can find the Professional Driver Development Site listed under MY TOOLS. Click on “Learning System”.
  3. Or, you can go to our main website, www.usxpress.com. At the bottom of the main page, you can click “PROFESSIONAL DRIVER DEVELOPMENT” to access the platform.

Once you’re on the Professional Driver Development Site, look for “Truckers Against Trafficking” in your list of assignments, and click on the video.

If you suspect that you have seen human trafficking while out on the road, call 911 or the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888. Learn more at truckersagainsttrafficking.org.

Don't get stranded in freezing temperatures. Use Anti-Gel.

by Miranda Brooks 7. January 2022 17:32

During winter weather, make sure to pour in one bottle of Anti-Gel per fuel tank each time that you fill up. Anti-Gel is available at all U.S. Xpress shops. You can also purchase Anti-Gel with your fuel card at  your fuel stops.

Anti-Gel prevents your fuel from gelling due to exposure to the arctic air. Your truck will not start or run if your fuel gels, resulting in your truck being towed, and lost time given to waiting on your fuel to thaw and return to a liquid state.

A few more helpful Anti-Gel tips:

  • If you're coming from warmer temperatures into colder temperatures, plan ahead and put Anti-Gel in your tank while you are still in warmer temperatures. This allows the fuel to mix with the Anti-Gel before hitting arctic air.
  • Run the bunk heater after you have put Anti-Gel in your fuel. This will allow treated fuel to be in the fuel line for the heater and ensure that the heater will run when you are ready to get in the sleeper.
  • Never use aerosol ether starting fluid.

Stay safe out there, and if you have any questions, check with your supervisor.

Scan in Your Paperwork from the Safety of Your Cab

by Miranda Brooks 6. January 2022 17:02

Have you tried the scanning feature in your Xpress Mobile App? If not, this is a great time to start using it. Why?

It’s Convenient.

You can scan and view your paperwork from anywhere.

It’s Instant.

The app allows you to skip the lines for scanners so you can get back on the road sooner.

It’s Easy.

If you already have the Xpress Mobile App, everything you need is already on your phone.

It helps keep you safe.

Since most drivers on the road have to scan in paperwork, scanners are often some of the more frequently touched items in our facilities and at truck stops. In the era of COVID-19, that’s the kind of thing you should be avoiding. Not to mention standing close to others as you wait in line for the scanner. When you use your app, you don’t even have to leave your cab. Just remember to disinfect your phone on a regular basis.

Don’t have the Xpress Mobile App? Go to www.USXpressway.com click on "Xpress Mobile App" to download it today.

Feel free to reach out to your manager if you have any questions.

We appreciate all you do!
